This wilderness capital of Canada is a small, intimate City of 25,000 with an International flavour. Winter Events:
Three weeks in February celebrate all that's different for those who live here and fun for those who visit.
- The Yukon Quest makes its home in Whitehorse and this year the race starts on February 6th. This thousand mile dogsled race is the toughest endurance race for both dogs and their human companions. This year Teams start in Fairbanks, Alaska and head down the trail to Dawson City and home to Whitehorse, Yukon. The first teams will be arriving around the 16th or 17th of February.
- The "Available Light Film Festival" Feb 10th - 14th at the Yukon Arts Centre. Canada's premiere feature film festival North of 60 is an intimate collection of 25 Canadian and International fiction and documentary films. www.alff.ca
- The Frostbite Music Festival February 19 - 21st 2010. Three days of foot tapping music to chase away the cabin fever. Always a huge favourite with every age of Yukoner, this music festival is much needed by the time mid February rolls around. It can be cold in Whitehorse and that can keep many people trapped inside of their homes for way too long, Frostbite lets everyone put on their dancin' shoes and boogie to the sounds of all kinds of foot stompin' music.
- The Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous Festival. Feb 24th - 28th brings crazy days and crazy nights of great fun! There's comedy, and dancing girls, cabaret and can-can dancers, Sourdough Sams and three days of dog sled races plus outdoor Northern cultural competitions like axe throwing and flour packing, a hairy leg contest, Rendezvous Queens, fiddling shows, an air show and much more. This week long event attracts Yukoners from all over the Territory as well as guests from all over the world. The highlight is the "Air Canada Snow Sculpting Challenge", sponsored by Air Canada .This competition attracts teams from across Canada and this year two Teams from the US have been sent to challenge us. Huge snow carvings will decorate the "Air Canada Snow Pavilion" that's in the center of the "Rendezvous" fun. Visitors can watch carvers work day and night to present 12 foot high sculptures made out of snow.
Winter Activities:
February is busy and the perfect time for visitors wishing to see Aurora.
Whitehorse in Winter offers the visitors a myriad of outside adventures that includes snow mobiling, skiing (especially x-country), dog sledding, tubing, heli-skiing, winter camping, scenic drives, Aurora viewing and swimming outside at -40 (Takhini Hotsprings).
For those who prefer indoor activities our festivals and events will keep you entertained and our local artists are world renowned.
