Winners of the 2009 Challenge

The Air Canada Snow Sculpture Challenge, February 21st - 27th 2011 may feature some of the best snow carving teams in the World: Alaska, Idaho, Argentina, Manitoba, Quebec, Spain, Yukon (Sundog First Nations carvers), plus Switzerland, Ontario, Japan, and Saskatchewan. They will all be competing for the Air Canada Peoples Choice awards and Artists Choice award.

Sponsored once more by Air Canada, this huge event takes place during Yukon Sourdough International Festival. This feature event takes place at the Air Canada Snow Pavilion on the Whitehorse waterfront at Shipyards Park. Carvers work during the day and night creating 11 beautiful large sculptures of Snow. At the end of four days the visitors to "Rendezvous" choose their favourite piece and prizes are awarded by the Mayor of Whitehorse and Air Canada. A special nugget of gold is also awarded by Skookum asphalt. Visit our sponsor page to see who also supports this event.

The organizing team consists of Don Watt, Gisli Balzar and Mike Lane. Donald and Mike are freshly back from their world tour that included sculpting in China, and the US competitions in Breckenridge. Last year Donald, Michael, Gisli and Shai Baxindale also represented Canada at the Olympics where they sculpted two murals in snow. These fine sculptors will also help the young Snow Carversin a training session set on site during the Rendeszvous event.

2011 Schedule:

The Air Canada International Snow Sculpture Challenge starts on the 21th of Feb. when the teams fly in just in time to attend the Rendezvous. The draw takes place for the blocks of snow on Tuesday evening and then it's all hands to the snow shovels as carving begins. Each team is given until Saturday at 10am to complete their sculptures and if they wish they can work around the clock.

Judging by the public, on site from 10am to 1 pm,

Prizes awarded at 2pm in front of the sculptures.

It's all fun with sculptors attending lots of the Rendezvous events when they're not too busy, or just need a rest.
